Botswana 50 Years Story
When diamonds were discovered in Botswana just a year after it gained independence in 1966, a new hope for a better future for the citizens of Botswana was ignited. When the Jwaneng diamond mine, the richest in the world, was discovered in 1983, Botswana’s government knew it had to do everything possible to harness this precious commodity to improve the country. Thus, a 50-50 partnership between the government of Botswana and global diamond miner De Beers was born, allowing the government to control half of the country’s diamond resources. Since then, the country has celebrated over 50 years of independence and prosperity thanks to diamonds. Diamonds Do Good Fact: From literacy an education, to employment and financial stability, diamonds have allowed Botswana to become one of the fastest growing economies in Africa, and transformed the lives of countless citizens.
Flaviana Matata Story
For model Flaviana Matata, there was nothing more important than being able to give back to her home country of Tanzania. In 2011, she founded a grassroots non-governmental organization (NGO) to support to underprivileged girls in Tanzania. With a rate of only 17% of girls enrolled in secondary school, Matata knew she needed to use her voice and success to make a real impact. The Flaviana Matata Foundation not only provides scholarships to girls from the time they start secondary school until they finish university, but also provides school supplies and helps renovate school buildings that often lack basic facilities. Diamonds Do Good Fact: Tanzania is one of the top ten countries where rough diamonds are found. The Diamond Empowerment Fund was an early supporter of the Flaviana Matata Foundation.
Botswana 50 Years Story
Maheshwari grew up in a single-room hut in Southeast India where she was expected to marry and start a family soon after puberty. Despite her seemingly sealed fate, Maheshwari was determined to be self-sufficient, and that started with getting an education. Thanks to a scholarship funded by She’s The First, a NGO supported by the Diamond Industry, Maheshwari has received an education and helped break the cycle of poverty in her family. Diamonds Do Good Fact: 9 out of 10 diamonds are cut and polished in India making this an important community for the diamond industry to support through programs like She’s The First.
